In David Dunn's "Nature, Sound and The Sacred", he evaluates the the purpose of sounds, the connection between biology and emotions, and how sound perception has changed throughout time. While music today stands as a form of entertainment to most people, he connects music to understanding our world around us more fully.
In part one of this article he evaluates the biology behind music and sound. As living organisms we all perceive wavelengths as sound. Differing biologies will change how the specific living being organizes the sound. He talks about the different perceptions of sounds, and how these differences help us understand more about our world. Music has the ability to change our understanding of the world which is why he places an importance on more researching being done in the musical world.
In part two of this article he talks about his experiments done with wildlife to produce music. In his experiments he focuses on bird calls and other nature sounds. While recording sounds of Nature in Africa, he realized that the sounds of nature are the most beautiful of all. His first experiment involved recording the sounds of various birds at three am. His second experiment involved creating music and the process of creating music.
All in all, I found this article to be comforting. Being a musician, I've always had a greater appreciation of music than most. I find the strangest sounds to be soothing and I enjoy different music than most of my friends. I think nature has the ability to transform people. The beauty and the sounds.
